Hadith Explanation

Angels Pray for Your Refund

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There is no day which dawns on the slaves of Allah without two angels descending and one of them saying, ‘O Allah, refund those who give money’ and the other saying, ‘O Allah, ruin those who withhold it.’” [Sahih Bukhari]

In the hadith of Abu Darda, the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There is no day on which the sun rises but that it is accompanied by two angels who call out – and all of Allah’s creation hear it except for men and jinn – ‘O people! Hasten to your Lord. What is little and adequate is better than what is abundant and heedless.’ And the sun does not set but that it is accompanied by two angels who call out and one of them says, ‘O Allah, refund those who give money,’ and the other, ‘O Allah, ruin those who withhold it.’”

Imam An-Nawawi says that praiseworthy spending is what is spent in acts of obedience and on behalf of your family and guests and in voluntary acts of charity. Imam Al-Qurtubi said that this includes both obligatory and recommended giving, but that those who withhold from recommended giving do not merit this supplication nor those dominated by miserliness to the extent that they are not happy about giving out what is due from them, even if they do it.

May we become those whom the angels pray in favour of.
