Hadith Explanation

Camel Hump Hair and Hijaab Styles

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There are two types of the people of Hell that I have never seen: people with whips like the tails of cattle, with which they strike people, and women who are dressed but appear naked, walking with an enticing gait, with their heads looking like the humps of camels leaning to one side. They will never enter Paradise, nor even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be discerned from such and such a distance.” [Muslim]

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) mentions two types of people in this hadith whom he did not see in his time, yet foretold about, and who we see today. This is also one of his miracles, and proof of his divine messengership. These two types of people who are likely to enter Hell for their sins are:

1. People who strike others with whips that are like the tails of cattle. Imaam Qurtubi said: “This type of whip can be seen among us in Morocco until now.” Commenting on Qurtubi’s remarks, Siddeeq Hasan Khan said: “Indeed, it can be seen in every time and place, and it is increasing day by day among the leaders. We seek refuge with Allah from all that Allah despises.” [Islamic Creed Series: Paradise and Hell by Dr. Umar S. al-Ashqar]

2. Corrupt women who make a display of themselves and tempt men and do not obey Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). Nowadays there are many women who are dressed but appear naked, as the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) foretold.

This hadith also warns us against adopting hair styles or Hijaab fashions in which the hair is piled on top of the head or the head scarf is layered and hair clips are used to create shapes that look like the humps of camels.

Care should be taken to walk in a way that does not attract attention either. High heels, particularly pin-point heels, should be avoided since they make the waist sway and the woman’s gait additionally enticing to men. High heels involve deception along with Tabarruj (display of beauty) because they make a woman appear taller than she really is and her posterior more prominent. Shoes that produce noise should also be avoided.

In the name of equality women have been brainwashed to work for their own keep, go out daily while dressed in a provocative manner to satisfy the lust of those they work for, and take care of their own defence. To earn for themselves in addition to having children, raising them and taking care of the housework is a burden that human beings have placed on women. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) does not place this burden on them. He (subhana wa ta’ala) orders men to do the running around for the livelihood, to take the responsibility for the family’s keep and safety, and frees women from having to mingle among men. She should do her part and try not to be a Fitna in society.
