Hadith Explanation

Cleanse Yourself Properly

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) passed by two graves and said: “The two are being tormented, and not for anything excessive: one of them did not free himself of traces of urine, while the other was a talebearer.” [Sahih Muslim]

In other words, these two deeds we must avoid – having traces of urine on ourselves, and telling tales on people. This is because the torment of the grave is too awful to risk undergoing because of them. Why incur it on things that can be avoided with a little care.

After you’ve relieved yourself, clean yourself properly. If you have access to water, use that as well to clean yourself. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) commands us in the Quran about keeping our clothes clean: “And your raiment purify” [74:4]

As for telling tales on people, we spot it easily in children, but don’t realize how often grown-ups do it, and what a huge factor it plays in souring our relationships and ruining our peace of mind.
