Hadith Explanation

Coccyx Seed for New Body

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Between the two Trumpet-blasts there will be forty, then water will come down from the sky and they will grow like herbs. There is no part of man that does not disintegrate (after he dies) except for one bone, which is the coccyx. From this he will be created anew on the Day of Resurrection.” [Bukhari]

With the first blast of the Trumpet everybody alive at the time will fall unconscious. After the water from the sky causes the bodies of all human beings to come to life “the Trumpet will be blown again and they will be standing, looking on (waiting).” [Muslim]

On the Last Day all human beings, dead for however many years, will be re-formed from a small bone. When the water from the sky reaches this bone, the body will grow from it like an herb grows out of a seed. This bone is the coccyx (tailbone) which is a round bone at the base of the spine.

The way that bodies will grow from the ground after Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) sends down that water which will cause them to grow, will be the way that plants grow from the earth after it rains. Hence, in the Quran, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) frequently likens the Resurrection to the revival of the earth with vegetation after rainfall.
