Hadith Explanation

First since Lut

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Uthman is the first to emigrate with his family for the sake of Allah since Lut.” [Tarikh al-Khulafa by Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti]

Hijrah (emigration) is to leave one’s homeland only so that one is better able to live a life in obedience to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) values emigration for His sake very highly and rewards it with wiping out all the person’s sins to that point.

Though hundreds of years separate them, after Lut (alaihis salam), Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was the next to leave his home and hearth with his family only for the sake of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

The first to emigrate with his family from Makkah to the Abyssinians was Uthman bin Affan and his wife, the Prophet’s daughter (radi Allahu anhum). The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) prayed for them with these words, “May Allah accompany the two of them.”

May our love of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) increase to such a point that it doesn’t allow us to coexist with sin and rebellion. May our appreciation of Allah’s glory make small for us the difficulties that lie in the path to His pleasure.
