Hadith Explanation

Illiyeen for Avoiders of Laghw

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever prays one Salaat and then prays the following one in such a way that he does not commit any Laghw in between, gets registered in Illiyeen.” [Abu Dawud]

In Surah Muminoon Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says that it is a characteristic of the Muminoon (true believers) that they stay away from Laghw. So what is Laghw?

Translated as “vain talk” it is anything forbidden by Allah (backbiting, being arrogant, insulting), or anything which is useless and wastes one’s time, bringing no good to them in the Hereafter (such as unnecessary talking, texting, radio and TV programs, social networking, etc).

The reward of those who stay away from Laghw is that they get registered in Illiyeen. So what is Illiyeen?

“No! The record of deeds of the righteous is in Illiyeen. And what may let you know what Illiyeen is? A register inscribed, attended by those (angels) who are blessed with nearness to Allah!” [Quran: Surah Al-Mutaffifeen, Ayaat 18-21]

It is only the people of Paradise whose entries are made in Illiyeen.
